THE ACADEMY OF GERIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPY DONATES $25,000 TO THE FOUNDATION

ALEXANDRIA, VA (March 23, 2015) – The Foundation for Physical Therapy is pleased to announce that the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy of the American Physical Therapy Association has donated $25,000 to the Foundation.

The $25,000 donation will go toward the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy’s research fund. The Foundation anticipates offering a $40,000 research grant funded through the Academy’s fund this spring.

“The Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy is eager to endorse the Foundation’s goal of supplying research to facilitate the implementation of improved health care provision to community-dwelling older adults,” said Academy President Bill Staples, PT, DHSc, DPT, GCS, CEEAA. “It is an honor for the Academy to be able to fund research in geriatric physical therapy and support the Foundation’s mission.”

In 2014, the Academy donated $100,000 to the Foundation, which included an additional contribution of $25,000 to the Center of Excellence for Health Services/Health Policy Research campaign, bringing their total support for this initiative to $50,000.

“The Foundation is very grateful and appreciative for the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy’s ongoing commitment to our long-term goals,” said Foundation Board of Trustees President Barbara Connolly, PT, DPT, EdD, FAPTA.

With more than 5,000 members, the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy work to address the critical needs of physical therapy practitioners working with older adults in a range of practice settings. The Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy supports the physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students who work with an aging population in roles of advocacy, direct patient care, consultation, supervision, and education.

The Foundation for Physical Therapy was established in 1979 as a national, independent nonprofit organization to fund physical therapy research to optimize health and movement. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $17 million in research grants, fellowships and scholarships. Many of today’s leading physical therapy researchers, clinicians, and academicians began their careers with this support. Foundation-funded researchers have gone on to secure more than $824 million in follow-on funding.
