FPTR Alumni Receive Profession’s Highest Honors in APTA’s 2021 Annual Awards

Ten Foundation for Physical Therapy Researcher (FPTR) Alumni were recognized in the 2021 APTA Honors and Awards Program for their outstanding achievements within the physical therapy profession.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Honors & Awards recognize outstanding achievements by APTA members in the areas of overall accomplishment, education, practice and service, publications, research, and academic excellence. This year, 10 past FPTR-funding recipients were among those to receive APTA Honors & Awards.

Congratulations to the following alumni on receiving APTA’s highest honor, the Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association. The honor is eligible to members who have shown unwavering efforts to advance the physical therapy profession for more than 15 years.

    (1994 & 1995 Doctoral Training Research Grants)
  • Deborah Lynn Givens, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA
    (1996 Doctoral Training Research Grant)
  • Greg Hartley, PT, DPT, FAPTA
    (2004 Florence P. Kendall Doctoral Scholarship)
  • Teresa Jacobson Kimberley, PT, PhD, FAPTA
    (2000 Promotion of Doctoral Studies I Scholarship)

The 27th John H.P. Maley Lecture Award was awarded to Susan L. Whitney, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy. This award is annually presented to an APTA physical therapist member who has shown clinical expertise and significant contributions to profession. Whitney was the recipient of a 1989 DTRG.

The Societal Impact Award was awarded to Lisa VanHoose, PT, MSPT, PhD, MPH. This award fosters the association’s outward-facing vision and highlights the impact of physical therapy in improving quality of life. VanHoose was awarded a 2006 Kendall Scholarship.

The Eugene Michels New Investigator Award was awarded to Jason Beneciuk, PT, DPT, PhD, MPH. This award recognizes physical therapists who have engaged in independent or collaborative research efforts within 10 years of completing their most recent physical therapy professional degree, postprofessional doctoral degree, or postprofessional doctoral fellowship. Beneciuk was awarded a 2018 Orthopaedic Research Grant.

The Marian Williams Award for Research in Physical Therapy was awarded to Lori Michener, PT, PhD, ATC, FAPTA. This award honors a physical therapist who has sustained outstanding clinical and educational research pertaining to the physical therapy profession for at least 10 years through published scientific studies, and a demonstrated continuity of professional commitment to physical therapy. Michener was awarded a 1997 DTRG.

The Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Inquiry Award was awarded to Allison Gustavson, PT, DPT, PhD, for the article “Application of High-Intensity Functional Resistance Training in a Skilled Nursing Facility: An Implementation Study” published in PTJ, Vol 100, No 10. This award recognizes an author in the association’s Physical Therapy (PTJ) journal, whose research and discussion has made a measurable contribution to the knowledge base of physical therapy. Gustavson was awarded a 2014 Kendall, a 2015 & 2016 PODS I Scholarships, and a 2017 & 2018 PODS II Scholarships.

The Margaret L. Moore Award for Outstanding New Academic Faculty Member was awarded to Elisa Gonzalez-Rothi, PT, DPT, PhD. This award goes to physical therapists not yet eligible for APTA membership who have been actively engaged in formal physical therapy education for a period of 2 to 5 years via full-time academic appointment. Gonzalez-Rothi was awarded a 2008 Kendall, a 2009 PODS I Scholarship, and a 2011 PODS II Scholarship.

FPTR’s early career funding is important to the profession because it helps new investigators develop independent research skills and prepare to apply for additional funding from larger agencies. Since 1979, FPTR has awarded more than $20 million in research grants, fellowships, and scholarships.
