Foundation for Physical Therapy Research Announces 2024 Research Grant Funding

The Foundation for Physical Therapy Research is awarding $780,000 to fund ten physical therapy research grants.

“This year, we are awarding ten highly competitive research grants, each having undergone rigorous peer review by our Scientific Review Committee,” says Paul A. Rockar, Jr., PT, DPT, MS, FAPTA, President of the Foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and partners at APTA, we are funding research across a range of physical therapy areas. These studies represent an important step in expanding the evidence base for our profession, and we are proud to support the work of these investigators early in their careers.”

The following investigators are recipients of the Foundation’s 2024 research grants:

Raine Osborne, PT, DPT, EdD, University of North Florida

Osborne is awarded the $40,000 VCU-Marquette Challenge Foundation Research Grant for the proposed study, Factors Shaping DPT Students’ Post-Professional Education Pathways. This grant is generously supported with funds from the APTA Supporting the Profession Endowment Fund. This Foundation Research Grant is named in honor of the top fundraising school for the 2023-24 Marquette Challenge.

Rashelle Hoffman, PT, DPT, PhD, Creighton University

Hoffman is awarded the $40,000 Geriatric Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, The Influence of Movement Velocity Biofeedback on Muscle Activation and Self-perception in Older Adults with Sarcopenia. This grant is generously supported with funds from the APTA Geriatrics Endowment Fund.

Jenna Tosto Mancuso, PT, DPT, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

Tosto Mancuso is awarded the $200,000 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant for the proposed study, Use of Paired Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Mobilization of Patients with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness: A Pilot Feasibility Study. This grant is generously supported with funds from the Magistro Family Foundation Endowment Fund.

Melike Kahya, PT, PhD, High Point University

Kahya is awarded the $40,000 Marilyn Moffat Geriatric Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, Multi-Session Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation to Improve Dual-Task Balance and Brain Activity in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment. This grant is generously supported with funds from the Marilyn Moffat Fund for Geriatric Research.

Megan O’Connell, PT, DPT, The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine

O’Connell is awarded the $40,000 Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, Efficiency and Equity of Dry Needling in Physical Therapy Practice. This grant is generously supported with funds from the APTA Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Endowment Fund.

Jessica Feda, PT, MPT, DPT, DSc, Baylor University

Feda is awarded the $200,000 Paris Patla Manual Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, Validation of a Clinical Prediction Rule to Identify Patients with Neck Pain Likely to Benefit From Cervical Spinal Manipulation: A Randomized Trial. This grant is generously supported with funds from the Paris Patla Fund for Manual Therapy Research.

Dana McCarty, PT, DPT, PhD, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

McCarty is awarded the $100,000 Paris Patla Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, Immersive Physical Therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Comparing Delivery Models to Improve Infant and Parent Outcomes. This grant is generously supported with funds from the Paris Patla Endowment Fund.

Mary Austin, PT, DPT, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Austin is awarded the $40,000 Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study, Patient Preferences on Chaperone Use In Pelvic Physical Therapy Across Practice Settings and Locations In the U.S. This grant is generously supported with funds from APTA Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Endowment Fund.

Jamie Greco, PT, DPT, EdD, Duke University School of Medicine

Greco is awarded the $40,000 Physical Therapy Education Research Grant for the proposed study, Outcomes of Faculty Residencies: A Multi-site Mixed-method Investigation of Key Interested Parties. This grant is generously supported with funds from the APTA Academy of Education Endowment Fund.

Yo Shih, PT, PhD, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center

Shih is awarded the $40,000 Jayne L. Snyder Physical Therapy Research Grant for the proposed study Balance Training With Restricted Vision: Implications for Fall Prevention in Older Adults (A Pilot Study). This grant is generously supported with funds from the Jayne L. Snyder Endowment Fund.

The Acute Care and Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Research Grants were not awarded this cycle, however, both grants will be included in the 2025 cycle. Notably, in 2025, the Acute Care Research Grant will offer double the amount in funding for a total of $80,000.

The Foundation’s volunteer scientific review committee is comprised of expert and experienced physical therapy researchers. The Foundation’s unique focus on funding physical therapy research that has been rigorously peer-reviewed helps ensure long-term growth of high-quality research in this field. To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $24.4 million in grants, scholarships, and fellowships.
