APTA Academy Makes Commitment to Propel Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy Research

The APTA Academy of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Physical Therapy has pledged $150,000 to support a $40,000 research grant every two years through 2028. The initial Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research Grant will open with all other research grant opportunities in April. More information on grant opportunities, including application instructions will be available on foundation4pt.org starting in March.

“This commitment will create new opportunities to fund research grants that will enhance excellence in practice for cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy. This will in turn support our Academy members in advocacy and practice, as well as the potential for professional development in research skills and collaboration,”  said Academy President, Angela Campbell, PT, DPT

The Academy has supported cardiovascular and pulmonary research through its endowment fund established with the Foundation in 2006 which supports a scholarship every two years. The new pledge will allow support for grants as well as scholarships.

“We appreciate our decades long partnership with the Academy,” Foundation President Paul Rockar, Jr., PT, DPT, MS, FAPTA said. “This pledge will provide focused research funding to advance cardiovascular and pulmonary research.”

The Foundation has much to offer as a funding partner for academies and sections. Its rigorous, independent peer review process ensures support for high-quality, innovative research that reflects the APTA’s research agenda and helps to fill evidence gaps in meeting real-world challenges.

The Foundation has awarded over $23.4 million in grants, scholarships, and fellowships in its 45-year history, thanks to generous donations capably administered through its effective grants management system. Foundation-funded researchers have received an impressive $930 million in follow-on funding, demonstrating the success of the Foundation’s approach to provide small grants that build research experience and capacity that, in turn, helps prepare researchers win larger grants from federal agencies and other funding organizations and foundations.

The purpose of the fund is to provide grant and scholarship support for cardiovascular research. The fund supports a PODS I or PODS II scholarship alternating between the two every year from 2024-2030.
